Robota: Clever toy and educational tool
نویسنده
چکیده
Therapeutic and educational applications of robots have created a demand for robots showing a number of social skills. These skills include the capacity to imitate, to learn from demonstration, to interpret gestures and to recognize speech. Robot toys are an ideal platform to investigate the potential and limitations of human–robot social interactions. This paper presents Robota, a mini-humanoid doll-shaped robot. Robota is used in an introductory robotics class at the undergraduate level. The class offers an introduction to different tools necessary for building human–robot social interactions. Through a series of hands-on projects, students learn how to use vision and speech processing and how to design learning algorithms. The goal of each project is to create an educational and entertaining game for normal and disabled children. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Play, Dreams and Imitation in Robota
Imitation, play and dreams are as many means for the child to develophis understandingof theworld and of its social rules. What if we were to have a robot we could play with? What if we could through play and daily interactions, as we do with our children, be a model for it and teach it (what?) to be human-like? I advocate the use of natural human-like interaction, such as imitation, speech and...
متن کاملPDA Interface for Humanoid Robots
To fulfill a need for natural, user-friendly means of interacting and reprogramming toy and humanoid robots, a growing trend of robotics research investigates the integration of methods for gesture recognition and natural speech processing. Unfortunately, efficient methods for speech and vision processing remain computationally expensive and, thus, cannot be easily exploited on costand size-lim...
متن کاملGames Children with Autism Can Play With Robota, a Humanoid Robotic Doll
This paper discusses the potential use of a small, humanoid robotic doll called Robota in autism therapy. Robota was specifically designed for engaging children in imitative interaction games. This work is associated to the Aurora project where we study the potential therapeutic role of robots in autism therapy. This section provides the necessary background information on autism (18.1.1), and ...
متن کاملExplorascope: an interactive, adaptive educational toy to stimulate the language and communicative skills of multiple-handicapped children
Very young nonor hardly speaking children with severe disabilities need active guidance to stimulate interaction with their environment in order to develop their communicative and linguistic skills. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems can help this process, provided that they are tuned to this specific user group. LinguaBytes is a research programme, which aims at developin...
متن کاملBuilding Robota, a mini-humanoid robot for the rehabilitation of children with autism.
The Robota project constructs a series of multiple-degrees-of-freedom, doll-shaped humanoid robots, whose physical features resemble those of a human baby. The Robota robots have been applied as assistive technologies in behavioral studies with low-functioning children with autism. These studies investigate the potential of using an imitator robot to assess children's imitation ability and to t...
